The Master in Sleep Medicine, endorsed by the Sleep Research Institute and the European University of Madrid, is a complete training program on this discipline that, at present, does not have a medical specialty as such.

The sleep Medicine Master offers a global and detailed knowledge of this field of medicine. Its syllabus designed to cover 100% of the theorical content of the European certification exam offered by the European Sleep Research Society (www.esrs-examination.eu ).

Additionally, due to the year-long internship required to apply for the European title, the Sleep Institute offers the possibility of completing the internship at any of our medical centers (Madrid, Santiago de Chile, or Panama), with an additional cost of 300 euros/month (three hundred euros per month). Sleep Medicine is a multidisciplinary field that includes general medicine doctors, neurologists, neurophysiologists, psychiatrists, pneumologists, pediatricians, endocrinologists, gynecologists, psychologists, odontologists, and nurses among others. The heterogeneous aspect of this medical area makes it essential to count with the basis of a good training/education in the field of Sleep Medicine.

It is for this reason that this master will be of good use for those medical professionals that seek to focus their practice in the field of sleep disorders/ sleep medicine. Moreover, counting with specific training in this field allows health professionals to broaden the scope of their clinical activity.

At the same time, we think that there is a lack of training for some professionals who, despite being exposed to them in daily clinical practice, have not had the opportunity to deepen their practice/knowledge/training. We can use pediatrics or family medicine as an example. Thus, this master will provide the necessary tools for the management of patients, increasing the quality they can offer.

The sleep Medicine field has been experiencing a sustained boom for years, due to the prevalence of sleep disorders among the general population. Therefore, it is of great necessity the existence of trained professionals who are familiarized with these pathologies.

A ‘titulo propio’ is a non-doctoral postgraduate education that is not regulated by a governing body.  The university’s own degrees offer training in a certain field or specialty, in response to the need for it in particular. They are standardized studies, endorsed and recognized both nationally and internationally. The system of ECTS credits on which they are based is universal, being useful, for example, when presenting an exam for a job position.

The Sleep Medicine master is endorsed by the the Sleep Research Institute and the European University of Madrid. It is accredited with 60 ECTS credits. Up to 48 ECTS credits corresponds to the syllabus and theorical classes, other 6 ECTS credits are given for the successful completion of the final masters dissertation, and the remaining 6 ECTS credits given for the completion of the internship which will be done in form of online practical case resolution.

The masters degree can be validated, as long as your home country disposes of a similar degree.

The vast majority of countries do not have any similar official degrees, due to the fact that the practice of sleep medicine is not officially regulated. Being able to show a solid formation accredited by an international scientific institution can be a way to start. As it is a degree with an internationally recognized prestige, both the master and the ESRS certificate provide an important external guarantee and puts the certificate holder at a great advantage.

The European validation exam, organized and endorsed by the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS) has both a theoretical and practical section (www.esrs-examination.eu).

The theoretical section refers to an exam that generally has an annual convocation. The Sleep Medicine master offers the necessary training needed to successfully complete this exam.

However, in order to obtain the European title, it is required to complete a a practical program (internship). This means that the candidate must prove that they have the necessary experience in a recognized sleep area.

Yes, the 2021-2022 Sleep Medicine master will be taught 100% online. Within the completion of the registration process, the student will be granted access to the virtual campus of the European University, where the syllabus will be posted as a PDF file as well as videos corresponding the material of the syllabus. In the same way, a total of four evaluation tests will be carried out online in a multiple choice format, based on the theory of the course as well as the practical resolution cases.

In addition, seminars led by the experts corresponding to the subject matter will be broadcasted online. During these, students will be able to interact with the expert and have the opportunity to ask questions, resolve doubts, or make comments on different observations made.

Both the director and coordinators of the sleep medicine masters program will be supervising the sessions. If necessary, students will be able to request online tutoring sessions.

Since the master in Sleep medicine 20210-2022 will be carried out 100% online, the student will not have to be travelling to another city, country, or to the university itself.  The topics will be progressively uploaded to the virtual campus of the European University. This will give the student the freedom of accessing all material at any time of day.

The practical content will also be carried out online in the form of clinical case resolutions. In addition, the four evaluation tests will be done online.

Although not a requirement, it is recommended to have a bachelors degree, diploma, or graduate degree in the field of health sciences. However, the masters syllabus is structure in order to allow the student to gradually learn the material, starting with the basics and progressively moving to the most complex content.

Throughout Module I, students will study everything related to the physiology of sleep, this is everything related to normal sleep. In Module II students will focus on everything that is not normal in sleep, this being the different pathologies of sleep. Within this module, the topics are structured according to the different diseases that may exist. This is a clear and logical way to facilitate learning.

Yes, the Sleep Medicine master syllabus includes and extensive chapter fully dedicated to complementary testing of sleep disorders. Both technical and neurophysiological/respiratory aspects of these will be explained. In addition, a practical experience will be conducted in the form of presentation of records and interpretation of such.

The master classes will be available either in Spanish or English, giving students the option to choose depending on their preferred language. However, all studying material used in both sessions will be in English.

The master will follow the official ESRS textbook (ESRS Sleep Medicine Textbook https://esrs.eu/product/sleep-medicine-textbook-non-members/) which is written in English. The ESRS exam will also be in English.

Given the scientific language that will be used and the supporting slides we think that it will not be a setback for those students who are less fluent in English.

The idea of the Master in Sleep Medicine is to guide the student and for the student to attain a real learning experience in the field of sleep medicine. Throughout the academic year there will be 4 evaluation exams. If the student does not manage to pass any of them, he/she will be have te opportunity to be reevaluates and take the test again at the end of the theoretical section, prior to the completion of the masters final dissertation.

The Master in Sleep Medicine includes a theoretical and a practical part. The corresponding practical part will be done online by solving clinical case studies.

The Master in Sleep Medicine offers a dynamic and interactive learning method.

The masters final dissertation must be done after completing the syllabus content. You have 2 months to complete it. The aim is to create a project, report or study in which the student applies and elaborates on the knowledge and skills acquired during the course.

Students can present a research project, reviewing previous literature work done on the subject, carry out a research study, or make an exhaustive review on the current state of an issue regarding sleep medicine. For that purpose, students will have the support and supervision of the Director and Coordinators of the Sleep Medicine master. The Sleep Institute will promote and encourage the publication of those works that are of high quality and interest, as well as its presentation at congress.

The Master in Sleep Medicine comprises a theoretical and a practical part. The practical part will consist of clinical case-study resolution classes led by one of our professors, alongside practical cases as part of the course’s assessments.

All of this enables the master’s program to offer training in sleep disorders that focuses on common clinical practice. Students will acquire the skills to manage sleep pathologies in both consultation and sleep laboratory settings.

Sleep medicine is extremely broad, and some very specific aspects of it will obviously require more specific training, such as surgery and splints, etc.
